Churches
Church is a major part of the social life in Greenwood, a regular part of Sunday activities and integral to the day-to-day life the rest of the week. Churches provide Greenwood residents’ opportunities to worship, grow spiritually, socialize, study and gather as families.
The area is home to churches and centers for most of the major religious denominations. There are more than a hundred twenty-five Protestant churches here, and one Catholic Church. Worship centers for members of the Islamic, Greek Orthodox and Jewish faiths are all within an hour’s drive.
Baptists today outnumber the other major religions, with more than 60 churches. The United Methodist Church has more than 20 area churches. Other major denominations here include Presbyterian, Pentecostal Holiness, the Church of God, the Church of Christ, Jehovah’s Witness, the Seventh Day Adventists, Assembly of God, Catholic, Episcopal and Lutheran. There is one area Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Churches provide many benefits to the community outside of the worship and fellowship they offer. For example, they sponsor home building for Habitat for Humanity. They serve food to people who are less fortunate. They contribute financially to children’s homes and many other charitable organizations.
