2010-2011 GLPA season offers “Music From Around The World”

Greenwood Lander Performing Arts’ 64th season begins September 30 with an appearance by the 5 Browns, piano-playing siblings with a fresh take on classical music.

Sponsored in part by Wesley Commons and in part by a South Arts grant, The 5 Browns perform individually and in various combinations, including complex five-piano arrangements.

The new season, dubbed “Music From Around The World,” continues on October 28 with Celtic Crossroads, an act which has popularized Irish music just as Riverdance did Irish dance.

On November 30, Lander University’s Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium will ring to the sounds of the Vienna Boys’ Choir.

A February 10 concert by Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, one of Russia’s leading ensembles, and a March 15 performance of ‘S Wonderful, a musical revue saluting the music of George and Ira Gershwin, round out the 2010-2011 season.

The 5 Browns, Celtic Crossroads and Chamber Orchestra Kremlin will also participate in GLPA’s 2010-2011 Outreach program, which introduces area youth to a variety of performing arts.

Other shows offered in conjunction with this year’s Outreach program are Strega Nona, the tale of a good witch who comes to the rescue of an Italian town, We the People, a musical civics lesson, and Charlotte’s Web, the story of a spider whose ingenuity saves her friend, a pig named Wilbur, from being slaughtered.

All five GLPA concert series performances begin at 7:30. Season tickets are $165 for adults; $150 for seniors (65 and older) and for Lander faculty and staff; and $85 for youth (18 and younger). Individual tickets can also be purchased, but season ticket orders will be processed first, so individual tickets may not be available for all performances.

Tickets can be purchased by calling the GLPA office at (864) 388-8326 or by mailing in the 2010-2011 order form, which can be downloaded from the GLPA website, greenwoodlanderperformingarts.com.

“Remember that tickets make excellent gifts,” said Myra Shaffer, GLPA executive director. “We also have gift certificates available.”

Shaffer emphasized that ticket sales alone are insufficient to cover the costs of such high-quality productions. For this reason she asks that area corporations, foundations, organizations and individuals consider serving as sponsors for this year’s events.

“As with all arts organizations we’re feeling the pinch, with the cutbacks in state and federal funding, she said.

Like last year, season ticket holders or donors of at least $100 are being invited to attend pre-show dinners, which will be served before all evening performances in the lobby on the upper level of the Cultural Center, near the auditorium entrance. Tickets are $20, payable in advance, and include dinner, beverage, dessert and tip.

Shaffer feels the events scheduled for GLPA’s 2010-2011 season qualify as “top-notch entertainment.”

“We feel really good about this season,” she said. “We hope that people will take advantage of these opportunities.”
